Social Web – How my life has changed…

I have always been a private person and now I am on Facebook, built a Wiki page and now I am blogging.  This is very bizarre.  I was always brought up to not have your life out there for everyone to see but as nowadays you are a ‘square’ if it isn’t.  I am on Facebook to keep up with my nephews and nieces however I found friends from high school as well.  The social web has changed my life by bringing me closer to friends that I have not talked to in a long time, lets me be a part of my great-niece’s life and see what is going on with her, and I get to play Words with Friends with people I havent seen in a long time.  I feel like this is only the beginning of what I can find and explore.  I have not always been so adventurous but how can you not be if all you have to do is sit there and type.

I do feel there are more tools out there I am not aware of; the Ashford University class Collaboration in the Virtual Classroom has opened my eyes to tools or resources I had never heard of or never thought I would explore.  I am not one to ‘keep up with Joneses’ but I will eventually follow the rest of the world when it comes to joining the latest websites.  It took me a while to get on Facebook.   I am the type of person that carefully looks at a website and lets others explore before I dare try.  I would rather be safe than sorry.   I am pretty savvy with navigating the web but I know there is a lot I don’t know about it.  I like finding things slowly and getting used to new tools I find before going on to the next.  The only concern with social media/web is that I would hate to raise a generation of children that the only friend they have is virtual.  I think sometimes, we should throw out technology and go back to basics and allow children to be children and play on REAL playgrounds – not VIRTUAL ones.  While I like managing my bank statements and bills online, Christmas shopping and of course college online I do believe its nice to get out of the house and go to a store, bank or even a college.  All in all, I like the web but I like reality better.
